We want to add a deck to our back yard. Should not this be a simple do it your self project?
Not exactly. There several things to consider when
adding any structure to your home. There maybe a permit involved, restrictions
from your association as well as set back restrictions. A licensed professional
is the best way to go to insure the job gets done right with no legal
entanglements.

Once the legalities are out of the way, turn your
focus to what kind of deck you want. Consider the space available. You don't
want to build a deck that overpowers the house or yard. When choosing a design,
think about how you intend to use the deck. If it's a solitary retreat, a
smaller, simpler design may be sufficient. If entertaining is your passion,
consider a design that incorporates benches, outdoor lighting and is strong
enough to hold the weight of groups of people.
What type of material should we
use?
Most decks are made of cedar, redwood or
pressure-treated pine, with pine being the cheapest. One material that is
growing in popularity is vinyl, which is more expensive, but maintenance
free.
How much is our Deck going to
cost?
The more elaborate the deck, the more it's going to cost. A
basic rectangular, one-level deck will be the cheapest to build. Start adding a
second level, a decorative railing, or awnings and you may end up paying more
than expected. Keep this in mind, though: Decks add value to a home and are a
great selling point.
Should we enclose our deck?
Enclosing
the deck can extend its usefulness. Anything from simple screens to sliding wall
panels can lengthen the time you can spend outdoors. Some manufacturers even
offer aluminum laminated roof panels complete with skylights and ceiling fans to
turn the deck into a virtual sun room.
If you don't want
something that elaborate but still want to spend time in the yard, a patio is a
nice compromise. Popular patio materials include paver stones, natural stones,
concrete or gravel. Concrete is quite flexible in terms of design and color.
Pigments or different size stones can be added to the mix to give the patio an
unusual finish. Grid patterns stamped onto poured concrete can produce a unique
design.
Different color pavers or stones can be used to
create a design that has an artistic twist. As with a deck, make sure the
finished product reflects the characteristics of the house. If you're not quite
sure how to design a deck or patio, consult a landscape
architect.
How do we keep our deck looking good for years to
come?
To enjoy your deck or patio for many
years, pay attention to maintenance. Decks need the most attention, unless made
of vinyl. Every few years they need to be power washed and sealed to preserve
the wood.
Deck sealers come in different shades to match the
original color of the wood. Depending on the size of the deck and how elaborate
the woodwork, it should take two or three days to wash and seal. Stains work
best under certain weather conditions, so consult the weather forecast before
you start the job.
